Can i use shredded paper

We use it! Our chicks are only two or three weeks old, but it has worked fine. We homeschool, so since it's the end of the year we had lots of papers to available for shredding. :)

i used shredded paper for the first 1-2 week(s) or so but switched to pine shavings

1- shredded paper has a lot of dust when cross cut
2- it has no odor or moisture control capability

Yes. it's the cheapest alternative if you have newspapers or papers already lying around the house

but from what i understand colored paper (like newspaper and other color document papers) is toxic to plants if you put them in the compost bin.. black ink is ok though

i bought a bag of pine shavings from wal-mart for $7 or so.. only have 5 hens + i only use pine shavings for the floor of the coop. it helps with the moisture and odor control.

it's been 1 1/2 month and i only used 1/6 of the bag..i clean out their coop and run each day.

I'm thinking of using it on the floor of the run too.. to help control the odor + flies!

I place diatomaceous earth underneath then a thick layer of shredded paper. My peeps mix it around and that stops the sticking on the feet and takes care of smells.
