Hen is raising chicks. Do I need to do ?

The chicks were doing really good and than last week when I went out on 2 seperate occasions a chick was missing. No feathers not a sign of what might have happen to them. We do have hawks in the area and I wonder if one of them got the chicks.

I was worried that she wouldn't take good care of the remaining one and than I noticed that for 2 days the rooster wouldn't let the hens/chick out of their run. (it's covered, but open at one end)He stood there all fluffed up and would peck at the hens if they tried to get past. I figured he saw something and was protecting them as now he lets them out.
I went out a couple nights ago as some of the hens and the rooster insist on staying in the orange tree at night and I have to physically put them in the hen house and could hear the chick peeping but couldn't find it. I thought oh no the hen just left it on the ground and went in to roost. I got a flashlight and located the hen up really high in the tree and the chick was sitting on her back. She must have flown up there with the baby on her back.
I was so suprized

I had no idea they would do that.
The remaining chick is getting really big and tonight when I went out it was sitting on the branch with mommy sitting over it. She let me pet it but not pick up.
Another thing I noticed about this hen when it had chicks the feathers on her bottom got really fluffy and soft. I've taken pictures and will try and get on here.

that was the most recent picture of the chick under mommy hen.

here they are with the chick on mommys back. I have 2 shots. The hen is black so she is hard to see.

here is mom hen with her hind end looking so soft and fluffy.
