I'm just wondering if regular grass hay, in a round bale, like you'd put out for a horse....would be OK to use on the floor of my chicken coop?

D'oh, posted too soon.!

Anyway- I can get a big round bale of regular cut grass (from last fall) for free right off the property, whereas getting enough pine shaving bales to cover the whole floor will break the bank & take 4 trips to the feed store just for the first layer. My coop is going to be pretty darn big- I'm using a pen attached to a former commercial-type pheasant brooding house (pics soon- see my thread in intro section for better explanation).

I can use pine shavings in any of the "heavier use" areas like under the perch, in and under the nest boxes, around feeders/waterers, etc....if it's better, but I'd like to be able to use hay for the majority of the space.

Just wondering if this is OK, my peeps are still peeps so I've got a few weeks to plan something else if it's not alright! Thanks!!

*DRAT! For the life of me I can't figure out why this posted twice. New here, I'll figure it out. Apologies. Thanks for the input so far!
