How long do chicks stay with mom??

Just a piece of advice for everyone take mom and babies out of coop get a dog playpen on Amazon mom stays with them for 7 weeks then put the playpen inside the run for the daytime so the others can see mom and chicks then add them inside coop at nighttime so try all wake up together, mom is queen bee. We made a mistake first time mom hatched one we left her in the coop and she got pecked to death so this time we did it different and now they all get along and are 9 weeks mom hen does it all

I've read some great advice and practices on BYC but learned the hard way my coop size/set up and flock age/numbers (already here when we bought the property) are not good for chicks either few days old or 3 months old.
We sent a few older girls to the pot, added home raised 4 pullets at 4-4.5 months and have 3 separate areas with chicks and moma. It's a bit more work but less stress on the coop as overall numbers are down and pecking order being re-figured!
Until we are ready to send a few more older girls to the pot in a couple of months, late summer, I will keep the chicks separate and see how long their mamas can stand it....last mama had enough at around 10-12 weeks so returned to the coop and her chicks stayed in their pen watching the flock -these chicks are finally safely integrated into the flock (relief!!).

Hi my mama hen has 5 chicks and they are just barely 3 weeks old and she left them in their nest area I have for them and returned to the flock to roost up high with them.isnt it a bit early?

My 6 chicks are 9 weeks old. Following advice from BYC I put them with mama back with my other girls at around 3/4 weeks. She did a great job protecting the chicks. She weaned them at 5 and a half weeks and stater laying the following day. Now they need to fend for themselves and just make sure they are not in the way of the adult ones. Can't wait to know how many girls and how many boys I have!!!
