Confessions of a Hatching Addict

Is this condition contagious or what? Is there any form of prevention out there to guard against this, like a flu shot does?

I don't suppose counsceling or therapy would help either, would it?

yogi- I dont think there is anything to it. It is a disease that keeps spreading. It will never stop. Counseling wont phase it one bit. It will just get worse till it takes over you. It like night of the living dead but it should be called. Night of the living hatchers

Buy your love some "valentine hatching eggs"...lol

Look hurt and say but I thought you would like them... make the bottom lip quiver just a tad. I, personally, can't take it when a man cries..lol.

The voice in my head says you don't need anymore chickens but I have learned to ignore the voices in my head...most of the time anyway..lol

Yeah, well, you all are frieghtening me now. As of yesterday I was at the feed store looking at the Little Giant incubators and the egg turners, thinking I just might want to try my hand at incubating some baby chicks. But I'm not sure about that now. I've got enough vices as it is now.
I am embarking upon a breeding program, building breeding pens, etc. and thought I might give incubation a try. But I see now that I have got to try to find a way for it not to take over my life. lol

If I where you I would stay away lol. I said to myself "I wll incubate a batch then sell the incubator" Well I incubated a buch and sold my bator to a BYC member. After a while it got to me. I bought a bigger incubator that cost ore and hatchred out another set. Plus more eggs comming next month.

I try to console myself by WATCHING, intently, all of the hatching updates and threads on here. I would LOVE to try it for myself, but I know I can't (I have to literally yell at my self "NO") so the next best thing is getting my 'hatch fix' on here!!! SO PLEASE EVERYBODY!!! Post more pics...please....I'm grovelling to you....

I guess that technically I really don't have a simple hatching addiction. If it was just a hatching addiction I would be hatching every egg in sight, including all the ones that my current chickens are laying. However, I'm actually being a little selective and going after specific breeds. So it's really more of an obsession to posses certain types of chickens rather than just hatching for the sake of hatching. Somehow, now that I've made this rationalization, it seems that my addiction is far worse than I realized. I don't want to merely watch eggs hatch out and then perhaps give them away or sell them. I want to hatch specific breeds and then keep them all.

The eggs I await now are some dark egg layers (Welsummers, Marans, and Barnvelders) that I bought off eBay. The eggs are supposed to be from at least one of these breeds, depending on which particular hens are laying a day or two before the order is packaged. I'm hoping some are Welsummer eggs so I might have a better chance of getting a pullet. Of the three Welsummers I've already hatched out, at least two are definite roos with the third undecided.

I figure, I'll just remind my wife of the recent incubator failures and tell her that its not likely I'll end up with too many chickens if I can't improve my hatch rate. Maybe a tear or two shed over the next egg that fails to hatch would help. Everyone on these forums is constantly boasting about the evil powers of Silkies and their ability to manipulate and control people. So Plan B is to get some bantam sized chicken saddles with leash attachments and convince my wife to walk and hold one of our baby Silkies.

Lol I feel your pain! Hi, my name is Holly, and I'm a hatchaholic. I've been buying and hatching eggs since I had my flock wiped out..... 5 months ago lol. Once introduced to the world of mail order eggs, it's hard to go back. I even built pens in my basement for adolescents I didn't want getting cold. :)
