I want to preface this by saying I’m a total newbie, so that means you can’t laugh!

This is so embarrassing but how do chickens do it?

The question was implanted(no pun intended:p) in my brain by an argument my friend and I had about whether you needed a rooster to get hens to lay. I tried to figure it out by reading the book I had and it said the hens are born with up to 2000 dormant eggs in them. But they’ll only hatch if there’s a rooster around. Do they hop up and do it chicken style?

Don’t laugh! I really want to know! My uncle said he had no idea and also said my grandfather didn’t either; and both of them were fulltime farmers.

So if anybody could settle the argument for me it would be greatly appreciated.

You do not need a rooster for a hen to lay eggs. You only need a rooster if you want the eggs to be fertile so you can have more babies. There are hens that are called egg layers and some that are female which are also meat birds. I have no idea if the ones that are usually used for eating lay eggs and if they do it is not very often. Yes, the hen is an amazing animal. She doesn't need a male to lay her eggs.lol.
Now as far as how they mate, well it is like doggy style but in the chicken way...lol...
 
haha ok let me explain this in an age appropiate manner for me haha
the rooster will take his feathers and drag them on the ground showing there in heat, then they jump on them kinda attack the back of there neck and then mate with them im sure there a vid. on youtube on it haha
 
Yep, a hen will lay eggs with out a rooster, the exact same way human women pass an egg during menstruation. Only difference is that a human will pass an egg if it is not fertile, while a chicken will always pass an egg, with albumen and yolk, and so on, regardless if it is fertile or infertile.

The cycle for humans is about a month, while the cycle for a hen is 24-36 hours on average.

The maiting that occurs between a hen and a rooster is very breif. The rooster will usually do a maiting dance with one wing down and will dance around the hen. If the hen submits, she will squat down spread her wings a bit and raise her tail. The rooster will then jump on top while holding the feathers on the hens neck or the top of her head. The actual contact is when the rooster lowers his tail to the ground. He then jumps off and if successful, the hen can be fertile up to about 3 weeks.
