Can I feed my chicks layer ration?

Thank you for your quick reply, Den. I just found out that my son ran out of grower and just put them on the layer feed he was feeding the older hens. They would have been in the 12- to 14-week age range when they were switched. I estimate they are now approx 21 weeks old, and I'm concerned that they might have problems later because of the higher calcium in the feed. I will switch them back to grower right away. They haven't started laying yet. Any comments about what might be the consequences of this? They are free-rangers, if that makes a difference.

@ChooksChick , I was interested to see your chart of protein levels for different ages. I thought the protein percentage is higher at birth, then decreases until they're at 16 for laying. The grower feed I purchase is 19%, compared to your chart's 16%. It's been awhile since I had to care for the chickens around here, so I may be remembering this incorrectly. Would you mind elaborating a bit for me on the protein issue? Thank you!

What happens with the extra calcium is the kidneys can't handle disposing of the calcium and they can be damaged. A lot of times they show no ill effects with the extra calcium. But there can still be some issues that happen. If they were getting anything else to eat, other than the layer, that would have lowered the total calcium. In your case being over twelve weeks, they may have handled the calcium well enough. Switching them back to a low calcium feed till they start laying won't hurt.
