The flu/sinus infection has been making its round here on campus. Seems that EVERYBODY is sick. I have still yet to catch it, and I would like to keep it that way! I have a busy week of tests and essays coming up and I just can't afford to feel crappy! I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to prevent myself from getting sick. Does that airborne stuff actually work? What about natural things? I've been drinking lots of orange juice and eating tons of bananas. I think that has been helping.

Airborne does seem to help me. Also, constant hand washing! Try not to touch too much stuff that everyone is touching, and wash your hands constantly. I normally do no get sick, I work in a school, around sick kids a lot, but I am always washing my hands, I work in the kitchen, I constantly wipe down the counters and stuff in there when the kids come through for lunch, and I clean the touch pad they use so it doesn't get too bacteria ridden!

Well, the garlic will keep others away from you so you might have a chance in not getting sick. lol. Well its hard to say because germs are everywhere. On the desk, on doorknobs, on your shoes, in your car that you brung it, the steeringwheel. Get my point? You can use herbs that are known to help build up the immune system like echinacea, elderberry. But if you are meant to get it, its gonna happen. That is that bad part

Airborne can work but you have to take it before you get sick. Once you get sick, it seems to be useless.
I think the most important thing is to wash your hands frequently!

I work with a "special population" that are always getting sick. I sanitize my hands with germ-x hand sanitizer religiously and take 1000 mg. of vitamin C and 50 mg. of zinc daily throughout the winter. I've only gotten sick once in the three years I've worked there with the viruses that go around. It was very mild and over with quickly.
Vitamin C is water soluble, so it's very hard to get too much. You have to be more careful with the zinc. I have a friend that swears by the Airborne. Her daughter is a pharmacist at a VA Hospital and she got her mom taking it. I haven't seen where airborne does anything that vitamin C and zinc can't do and the vitamin C and zinc are a heck of alot cheaper.

What kind of vitamin C would I get and where can I get it? I've heard that it helps the immune system, but never knew what kind to get. Never heard of the zinc thing, but it's worth a try!

I would say the main thing is good hand washing and never rub your eyes with unwashed hands! That is the surest way to catch something! Make a habit of always washing your hands after you have been out in public. It's also a good idea to keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you for times when you don't have access to soap and water.

For a young college student, I would also say, "eat right, and make sure you get enough sleep!"

Well, as a fellow student... All I can say is being sick during exams is one of the worst things in the world. Don't you hate staring down at some impossible exam with the drippy nose just ready to flow out all over it? One hand on pencil other with tissue on face.

Just wash your hands a lot, don't share drinks or foods with anyone, know that every door and desk is a possible point of transmission, and avoid snacking without washing hands or rubbing your eyes while trying to stay awake in class.

Now if it's an airborne virus/bug, good luck and hope that you already got that strain so you are immune!

Oh, and VERY important. GET SLEEP! Staying up 3 hours more to study for that exam will weaken your immune system and give you a false impression that you did well on that exam. Being alert and less studied is a much better use of that 60 minutes of exam time.

I am not the one to give advice since I am just getting over a week long bout with the flu. But good nutrition and extra hand washing will go a long way. Also, get the flu shot. It may not give you 100% protection but it is better than nothing.
