last summer I got my first batch of 4 chicks and a month later got 2 more day old chicks, a millie fluer d'uccle and an unsexed black silkie that of course turned into a rooster. I hadn't wanted or planned on getting a rooster but he and his girlfriend are inseparable . It took a while but he has claimed his role in the flock. He calls them for food and does his little roo dance for them. All but one of my hens will mate with him, my barred rock will have nothing to do with him and will attack him if he goes after me. She was the top hen before he took charge and won't give up that roll. I am her rooster and she squats for me. If I were you I would definitely keep the rooster if he is friendly. If he gets mean I would get rid of him. My silkie roo mostly ignores me but frequently goes after my husbands and fathers legs and feet. He will occasionally go after my feet but I call Pebbles and she takes care of it. When he does go into "attack mode" he is always looking down at our feet, and a broom, rake, or the bamboo stick I use to herd my dogs away works to fend him off. I say go for the WHOLE chicken raising experience if you can, lots of folks can't.
