Marking eggs with a sharpie

Does anyone know if marking eggs with a sharpie or anything other than a pencil affects hatch rate.

I find the pencil fades and then I am in a real mess!!
 
Sharpie contains some rather nasty organic solvents... I would not want that in contact with an egg.
Try a different grade of pencil harder will not rub off so easily
 
I have seen a number of posts that indicate they mark with a sharpie with no ill effect. I use a number nine lead pencil and it never fades or is hard to read. I think the sharpies are too messy for my heavy hand.
 
The egg membrane should keep out any ink until all the nasty stuff evaporates! I have used it for a while and had no problems! I have never heard of any issues with using a sharpy, only non issues! We all want to be GREEN and not take any unneccessary risk but There has not been any issues with the sharpy on eggs reported yet!

We have been using sharpie for years I mark the pen number and the hatch date on each egg. A pencil mark will come off the egg when they are put under chickens and then you want know what pen they are out of. Sharpies is the best thing to use I hatch 300 to 500 peachicks a year and around 150 pheasants and never had a problem.

So very glad to read this. I used fine point sharpie on my eggs currently under a broody before even thinking about it and then started worrying after reading about it not being safe. Thanks for the peace of mind;-)
