How much window is too much window?

Windows seem important. I'm not sure if it's for light or if it's supposed to indicate importance of open windows. I plan on having venting and other windows, but I ran across a window my grandpa got ahold of when taking apart a house (which I'm hoping he'll let me use his supplies, that part is... sketchy still). It's about 4' tall and 4' wide. It's split in half because it's a sliding window and I was thinking it would be a perfect way of getting in and cleaning out the pen but it locks so it'd be safe. It's also one of those that doesn't let heat out I believe.

But is this too much window? Too much light coming in? Other concerns? Maybe if I painted it... but I'm pretty sure my grandfather won't let me do that.

Honestly this is all stuff he hasn't touched in years, it might just be easier to use it and apologize later.

Hi,

The size of this window you're talking about is Great. It will allow plenty of light and sun in when the winter months arrive. Chickens LOVE to nap in a sunny spot in the winter. Also, when the sun goes down, there will be plenty of moonlight coming in the coop. They like this as well.
Just put the darn thing in. The birds will love it I promise. Good Luck.

sounds like a fabulous window to me. My great grandfather had a chicken coop entirely made of windows and set into a hillside. The roosts would face the windows so I remember walking by the chicken house and seeing all the hens staring out at me.

I'm with Mona and Vicki, that sounds like a great window. I will add a caution though! When you install windows place them so that you do not get the summer sun burning in and overheating the coop. Place larger windows to the northerly side of the coop or build awnings that shade the windows from the mid-day and afternoon sun in the summer to keep things cooler. Just like a pet or child in a car in a parking lot the hot summer sun shining in windows can seriously overheat your chicks.

Otherwise, well thought-out and placed windows are great for added ventilation and a big treat for the chicks. Mine love to sit on the pearch and peek out the window, kind of like TV for chickens I guess!
