I have a reclaimed metal porch swing frame that I use for the killing station. I bolted a length of 2X6 along the top (ran the bolts through the holes already there for the hooks that hang the swing) and attatched the cones to that. There are 3 cones, one from a traffic cone, one a large bleach jug, and one is made from a nursery pot cut & twisted into a cone. There are also wire hooks set between the cones from which to hang the birds while they're being plucked.
I use buckets under the cones to catch the blood, and hold them up with wire tomato cages so they're close to the dripping heads. There is a wire milk crate to hold the pot of scalding water, and my teenager comes out when called with fresh hot water that gets boiled on the stove. One day I hope to score a turkey fryer from FreeCycle and use that for scalding.
It really helps to have a place from which to hang the birds while plucking. I pluck by hand, which I don't mind, because I usually do only 6-8 birds at a time. I often have to work by myself, and get a rhythm going by having one bird hanging to bleed while I pluck & gut the previous one.
My work table is just a big sheet of tarp-covered plywood set up on TALL sawhorses. It really helps to have the table up high, about elbow height, so save your back. I would love to get a piece of reclaimed countertop to use instead.
I keep everything set up under a big shady mango tree, and bring out an electric fan to keep me cool. I also keep a hose handy, with a trigger sprayer, attatched from a branch overhead so it's within easy reach and I don't have to keep bending to pick it up from the ground.
Each session gives me new & better ideas to make the next session go even easier.
