how long does it take to lay an egg?

That first eggs is very special. Don't be surprised if you get a few "soft eggs shell" ones at first. I have 8 RIR's and after a month, they all were doing great. Oh, you will probably get a few "double yokes" too.

I blow out the eggshells of each of my pullets' first eggs.  That way I have the memento AND get to eat the good stuff inside, too!
I do the same thing. I blow out the first egg of each pullet, then a icover with a unique sheet of clay and bake it and put the name of the hen she came from on the egg.9

Keep giving the porridge, but only as snacks. No sugar. Not good for them and they dont need it. But definitely keep watching for that egg! Mine laid their first about 3 weeks ago and it stills seems new to me every time i go out to check and find an egg! I watched ine of my Buffs lay her first egg yesterday and it was just as exciting to me as it seemed to be to her! Lol! :D

They Will lay. They are probably adjusting to their new surroundings!!!I have 6 hens and got them at 3 days old. They all laid within their 255th week, except for 1. We thought she wasn't going to be able to lay.....9 months later that crazy girl started laying. Simply crazy!!! I just love having chickens an watching their cooky relationships with each other. But, to answer your question, no one know why or when but it will happen. Good luck!!!
