We have some sick Wyandottes and I am puzzled as to what is wrong. Thought I'd check with the knowledgeable folks here to see if you may have any ideas. Several days ago, we had some chickens humped up and acting somewhat lethargic. This continue for 2-3 days (depending on the chicken). Now they are walking around a bit more and not humped up, but they keep shaking their heads a lot and stand with their eyes closed a lot. Poo is normal. They are eating and drinking. There is not sneezing or coughing and no other signs of repiratory distress. We're wondering about the possibility of gape worms. Don't know too much about them but found some info when searching google for causes of shaking head. Does anyone know anything about gape worm ie" symptoms, treatments.
We got some worm medicine from our local feed store and I gave that to them this morning. It was peperozine which is the only kind of worm treatment they carried. It doesn't mention gapeworms and says it is for roundworms in chickens. I gave it to them because I know they should be treated for worms periodically anyway and it won't hurt them even if they don't have worms. Our chickens are about 3 months old. None of our older birds seem to display these symptoms. They are in a different run.
Any ideas what could be wrong with our chickens? Any treatments suggestions? Is there any kind of natural dewormer I could try in case it is gapeworm?
We'd appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks in advance.
