Deep Litter Coop Cleanout

We use the deep litter method and love it. Because our coop has a raised (waist-high) henhouse that opens into the run for cleaning, we just brush out any soiled bedding from the henhouse straight into the run. There's no need for a bucket or box to collect/transfer it.

I have just started using this method in August. I started with 2 huge bags of shavings and then 2 bales of straw on top. Every week I go in there with the rake and move the bedding around, fluff it and stuff. there is still no smell what so ever. this week I added another bale of straw. and I will continue doing this every other week until I reach the desire depth. We get real cold winters here so i want to make sure they stay warm too. Under all the bedding we have a type of cloth my DH got from his construction company meant to allow moisture to pass through but not back up, not sure how it works but its great and come spring all we have to do is pick up the cloth and drag the whole thing to be emptied int he compost. If its too heavy we got wheel barrows :)

SO many great ideas! Thanks, all!!

I know this is an older thread, so I hope this is the relevant one to ask this question. I have been doing the "back to Eden" gardening method for several years. this is a method in which you have several inches of wood chips on top of garden. I am ready to clean out my deep litter coop. I noticed there is a lot more dirt/poop in with the wood chips than I thought. Does anyone else use this method of gardening? Do you sift out the larger chips? I'm not sure what to do.
