Knowledge of domestication is evolving largely do to genetic studies. It appear multiple species (wild) are involved. Evidence today based only on extant (surviving) lineages (breeds / populations). Many likely died out for various reasons. Most surviving chickens are largely derived from red jungle fowl and those original red jungle fowl repressented populations in southeastern Asia. At some point grey jungle fowl entered mix but still as a minority to the red jungle fowl base. Later has human populations moved birds west the Indian populations of red jungle were incorporated into domestic chickens of that area. Apparently the chickens of southeastern Asian and Indo-Pacific had green jungle fowl infused as well. Recently, over last couple hundered years or so, chickens have been moved all over place making determinations as to who is derived from who more difficult.

I suspect no genetic analysis to date repressents all the chicken lineages so some interesting stuff yet to be found.

Most chickens originated from Asia, Red Jungle Fowl were domesticated and breed for bird fighting. So yes the original "chicken" is in Asia, basically red jungle fowl are wild chickens.
