Can I mark my ducklings feet with permenant marker to keep track of who is who and their gender once I am very certain?? Or losely wrap electrical tape around their leg? What do you use if you mark your babies to tell their gender?

Sharpee is fine. Do not use tape or the like. Nothing that can strict growing or harm them. Some use tiny elastic hair bands or small zip ties, but again you have to watch and make sure they do not cut circulation. The permanent marker is the best choice I would say.

I'd never thought of using sharpie. Kat have you used it? Does it stay on? I'd think it'd come off after a few good sessions in the kiddie pool.

Try the sharpie, but my experience with waterfowl has been that marker and/or paint just washes off in less than a day, so you have to replace it morning and evening and even then... we ended up with mis-sexed goslings because we thought we'd keep up with it after taking off the bands they came with, but we couldn't keep the marker on them and one day I didn't know which was which and when we sold one "pair" we ended up with two ganders and no goose.

Now I use zip ties. You can buy a bunch of little tiny ones at DIY stores for a few bucks, and I just check them every couple days to make sure they're not too tight. Once they hit adolescence, you can check every week or so. I love them because they come in many colors so the combinations are endless for individual identification--pink for girls, blue for boys, yellow if I'm keeping, orange if I'm selling, left leg for one breed, right leg for another... and so on.

Have fun.

Zip ties is what I use as well for my ducks and chickens.... I zip tie my purebreds so I don't confuse them with my mutts LOL Sometimes they can be really hard to tell in the first few months.

Cool! Just don't forget to change them frequently--even a day's growth can sometimes make them too tight, and any more than that and you've got duckling leg growing around the band and you're in trouble. It takes a little practice to get them loose enough for comfort but tight enough not to come off. It gets easier with practice.
