Those of you with exchequer leghorns (esp. hatchery stock), what color eggs do your birds lay? I've been waiting for mine to start laying, only to find that yesterday after she left the nest box there was a small pale tinted egg (very nearly white, but definitely cream colored). I had originally thought my SS were laying these small cream colored eggs because the first day we found them we found two. Now I'm thinking the first one was actually from the day before (it had frozen solid and cracked) and they were both from my leghorn. I must admit, I'm a little disappointed that she doesn't seem to be laying white eggs (although not nearly as disappointed as I'd be if my EE were laying brown eggs).

Sorry I see now where you said it was a hatchery chicken. Still could have something in the background that causes this.

Being from a hatchery I suppose it's possible. Her eggs are exactly the color I picture when people describe game hen eggs as a "creamy off-white" color. I'd still like white eggs, but I can't really complain as she's shaping up to be my second most reliable layer so far. Not saying much when I only have 3 or 4 out of 7 girls laying so far, but I've gotten an egg a day from her for the last 3 days.

I kind of like the cream colored eggs myself they are a little different from white or brown. Just a sprinkling of brownish tint on white is what I like to call it.

My dad bought some hens a couple weeks ago and they white chickens with black flecks on them much like a California White, the guy he got them from said that he hatched them out last year and he didin't have any Leghorns so he figured that they were some kind of game mixed with soething wlse around the place, they lay a cream colored egg. The eggs are pretty and nicely shaped also.

If she is laying good and you just want eggs for eating then be happy with her. If she was that good and I owned her I would find a good rooster to put with her and raise me some more good layers.

All breeds in the Mediterranean class should lay white eggs except the Buff Catalanashich lay a tinted egg.
