Chinese Blue Breasted "Button Quail" Thread!!

Very pretty. I need to build another and have been checking out all kinds of ideas.
thank you.

The are loving being outside, they can peck at dirt through the wire on the cage bottom. Yesterday was very funny when one pulled up a huge earthworm - the worm was over 2 times the length of the quails body! They all ran around chasing the one who caught it, she had it sticking out her beak as she could only swallow half of it!

I was amazed that after a few minutes she managed to eat it! I think she must have felt really full after that meal.

They also love eating any insect that dares to venture into the run. Now keeping them so busy has totally stopped the feather picking.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but my little golden just laid her first egg!!

I am so so so happy and proud! I can't wait until my other girls start laying as well. I'm looking forward to having enough quail eggs to make a batch of celebratory cupcakes. Looking at the size of this egg, though... it might be a while.

jak2002003 i am totally envious of your lovely pen! I wish i lived in a safer area and could house my birds outdoors.
They do have an outdoor day pen where they can play and get sunshine while i'm home, but i'm not able to let them out more than two or three times a week. Poor babies. I sprout birdseed in pie pans for them so that they can have grass to nibble while they're stuck inside.

Have you given them meal worms yet? dried or live. Live mealworms at pet stores. Dried mealworms at Tractor Supply Company under Happy Hen Treats. Do not give mealworms to babies...they get confused and eat their feet. Only to adults---but they love 'em!

Though I've had chickens and turkeys since 2011, I'm a brand new button quail owner. I got four of the little darlings last month and am quite enjoying them. They're starting to lay regularly for me now. I'm thinking of incubating a batch next month. I think of them as my micro-chickens!

Anybody have buttons in Indiana or willing to ship to Indiana? Do button eggs ship ok? I had them as a kid and would love to get back into them, but having trouble locating them. All colors considered, but I love the silvers.

Try ebay for eggs. Also most folks do not like to ship adult birds but there are a few who try. I think they are too flighty to ship and would die from fright. that said some people try anyway. Jodi McDonald sells eggs on her site: www.brackenridgeranch.com and she also has a book on them that is great. There are several yahoo groups and I am moderator on a facebook page called Button Quail if you are on there.
Just a warning...these little guys are addicting! Good Luck.
