Coyote War...Its On!

Dogfish, my DH is law enforcement...he says...not legal to have in your possession, Is there a difference in silencer verses suppressor? sounds same to me. He did a search warrant a few years ago, guy was growing weed next to a school, but he had lots and lots of fully auto assault rifles, I think a grenade, some nazi uniforms...and some silencers. he was charged federally and went to prison for possession of the silencers...

But back to my coyote war, I have been watching them and no opportunity for a shot last couple days, today I saw 3 of them, heard even more. but...they are crossing my property in the same spot. all of them. I have become coyote highway. so we are going to set up maybe this weekend and watch the path they are using...

Your husband needs to read the law. Just because he passed the academy a few years back, or 20 years back, doesn't mean he knows every law. Just because someone is a deputy, or has been one, as is my case, doesn't mean that they know the law until they can point to it in the RCW's and cite it word for word. He needs to read it, and learn it. I have been pushing for this issue for a number of years. WACOPS, Washington Chiefs of Police and Sheriff's is in support of the bill, as there is no law enforcement exemption to the USE of these. I can supply links to the TVW testimony given in front of the house and senate judiciary commitees if he is still a non-believer. Passing this bills allows LEO's to USE them, as well as average citizens. The RCW is below. He should be very familiar with title 9 and 9(a).

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=9.41.250

The key phrase here is "(c) Uses any contrivance or device for suppressing the noise of any firearm."

That RCW say nothing about the possession or ownership, only use. Please show him the link below. It is DIRECTLY from the the Senate hearing report talking about the change.

I mean no disrespect to your husband, but every LEO needs to update their RCW knowledge every single year. I bought a new pocket addition every year, and a new large book every year. He knows what I am talking about.

Washington is one of 38 states that allows ownership, but we are the only state that does not allow use. USE is the defining word. We live in a freakin' nanny state.

Ownership of suppressors is HIGHLY regulated by the federal government, where you have to either get an LEO sign-off on your application, supply two sets of fingerprints on FBI fingerprint cards (or form a trust like I have), then pay $200 and wait 60-180 days to have your application approved AFTER you have bought and paid for the suppressor, receive your tax stamp, and finally get to take your purchase home. The kicker in Washington is that you then can't use your purchased item, and have to travel to either Idaho or Oregon to be able to use them.

I wish your husband well, and I will think good thoughts for him.

Take care!

thanks for the tone, he doesnt need to read anything. I did not disrespect you when I asked if there were a difference in the names that people call them. I also did not jump all over you and suggest you were stupid and needed to go read the laws beings as you just got out of the academy. 1 year or 20 years. He knows what he is doing and unlike you he is not a has been... He still works hard at his job. so please take the time and go back and reread what I said, I stated what he told me, I did not point fingers and jump all over you saying you were wrong and insinuate that you were stupid and didnt know your job. thanks for that. Next time I will just nod my head and worship the fact that there are far superior folk on a chicken forum.

So back to coyote wars, which by the way, silencers and the laws governing them have absolutely nothing to do with. Thank You for the input. I will continue to try and protect whats mine...as loud as I can.

The weed grower most likely didn't have tax stamps or a proper documentation of ownership. He probably got more time for the Full auto and illegal suppressor ownership than he did with the MJ. Full auto, just like suppressor ownership, is fine, as long as you owned the full auto item prior to 1994 (Washington), and it was a registered machine gun prior to 1986 (federal). Suppressors = silencers.

I sincerely apologize if you took offense. I meant none at all. Sorry if I get a bit passionate about the issue, as I have owned many NFA items over the past few years and have had contact with LEO's who had no understanding of that particular law. It isn't one that officers come into contact with on a regular basis. Imagine being handcuffed for possessing a legal item because an LEO didn't know the law. Every time I travel with my NFA Items I have to bring copies of federal tax stamps, federal law, and state law information with me. It isn't fun, laying face down, handcuffed, in the rain on pavement, because of an officer's mistunderstanding of the law, and you have not broken any law. (tail light was out, "what's in the case, oh a silencer!" is how it started on a trip back from Idaho) Another WSP came along and corrected the first trooper after the two on scene who had put me on the receiving end of a felony stop called in the stop. Felony stop equals guns drawn, yes I was armed (legally), so they got pretty tense.

He was incorrect in his opinion and I was correcting that. This is why I cited the RCW and the current senate hearing data. I meant no disrespect, I did not mean to come across with a tone. I entirely respect the job that law enforcement personnel do day in and day out. Both my wife and I served in different capacities in LE. It was when we decided to have children that we took a different carreer path, so she is a probation officer and I am a commercial lender for a small bank. Certainly not has-beens.

There is a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to NFA items, along with myths and heresay information, so I don't want anyone to get in trouble for a misunderstanding of the regulations. Lord knows I've made my own mistakes Failure to obey the letter of the law can have serious repercussions for people who decide to make their own without a Form 1. (See the weed dealer.)

Even the best of officers make an error.

Best of luck on your war on the coyotes.
