ok last night my goat started acting strange. She is so big and its about that time.Yesterday was the most i have felt the babys move .So yesterday night in her stall she started scratching at the ground and then she started laying down and moaning softly as she breathed .Like she was pushing. Her ligments are softining as of like 1 hour ago but i can still feel them. What is confusing me is that she has no gew or water comeing out of her woo woo.Its just redish and long and alittle swollen. She jusrt lays there and looks like she is haveing contraction. She kinda has alittle soft grunt when she breaths her eys are half open and she looks so uncomfortable. she will get up and lay back down and back to soft grunting. She is a first time mommy.I sat up with her all night last night and still no babys.Whats happening here? Why has water not broken? How come she is showing signs of labor but no water break?how long tell the ligaments disaper totaly ? Any advice? its been 24 hours now with early labor signs

I would have one person hold her and I would check her. To check her take a clean finger or hand if she is dialated enough and feel for babies that she cannot push out. She may require assistance. Remember to help a goat both front feet and head have to come out at once or both hind feet together at once to deliver healthy baby.

so here water does not have to break for her to be able to delever them?

A small water sack will come out with the baby. No water does not have to break. Sometimes first time mothers cannot push out the babies and only way to know your mama is not in trouble is to feel. A momma goat in distress will paw the ground lay down push, paw the ground then lay down stand up then lay down. She will act miserable.

If she cannot push out the babies you will feel a leg, or a nose, maybe a hindend of baby. They may not be able to come out because positioning. One thing to remember when you deliver a baby goat backwards you have to pull it quickly because the umbilical cord will break before his head is out and that makes him take a breath and the head needs to be out for him to breathe. Take a rag with you and wipe their faces and to dry them after born.

Thank you for yor reply i am a wreck still no sleep.I tryed to check for dialation but it doesnt seem to be enuf to really get in there an check? how els could i help? Do you know how long she could be in labor for? like early labor and all? thank you so much your really helping

She can be in labor 2 to 3 days and it will not be continuous labor. I have delivered many hundred baby goats. The only sure way to know your goat is not in trouble is to check her for dialation with CLEAN hands. Always wash your hands. You will see small white water filled sack before baby is born. Most times you will be able to help her fine if she needs it. I will check her for you again

I was in your EXACT situation last night. Except mine was a sheep not a goat. I went out every 2 hours and she didnt have a baby. Moaning, groaning, ligaments, swollen, huge belly etc. No baby and i am hoping she will have one tonight. I think early labor signs like you said can last for almost a week on rare occasions.

mistype I will check here for you again. Your goat is fine since you cannot feel anything there and she isn't dilated enough. Always remember you have to deliver together 2 front feet and head..... and if backwards both hindlegs together. GENTLY feel so not to break cords and not to perforate mothers uterus. Never force your hand through something and all is safe.
