Hi, I'm in discussions with my local council regarding changing the livestock bylaw to allow backyard chickens (wish me luck!). One question that has come up is how much waste is generated. My research shows a chicken produces about 1/3 to 1/4 as much waste as a dog over a year, but what about bedding waste? Do most of you compost this, or use it directly as a garden amendment?? Disposed of at the curb?

Can anyone give me an estimate for yearly amount? I am planning on hatching my chickens this year, so I don't have any practical experience regarding how much and how often the bedding in a coop is changed.
Thanks,

Neil

The average chicken produces about ¼ of a pound of compostable manure a day. Hen waste can be composted and used as fertilizer. The average dog generates 3/4 of a pound of manure a day. Canine waste cannot be composted because of the harmful bacteria and parasites (hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms) that can infect humans. This dog waste is considered a major source of bacterial pollution in urban watersheds.

Chicken manure and bedding can all be composted and does not need to be sent to a landfill.

I have a few people that will come to my pile of chicken poo mixed with bedding (wood chips) and take what they need for the garden... they use a tiller and blend it into the soil and then others just lay it on top.. so I have very little waste
