How do you feed OATS to chickens?

My chickens love oats cooked.... I'm sure they would eat them as is. Never tried it, but I love watching them go nuts over wet food. Similar to my dogs, they love wet food. Even just their normal food with water added it better for whatever reason. So as an occasional treat, I'll cook some oats. ;)

I've seen a recommendation for about three cups of WHOLE oats for eight chickens per day. It was a winter recommendation I believe. But supposedly it is their favorite. Now to find a GMO free source of whole oats

Just reading through this thread in middle of night...sleepless in UK! (Worrying about tape worm problem) but my hens love oats, and so do the humans. Today I have just ordered 25 kg sacks of groats and jumbo rolled oats for us all to share...really good price compared to buying it by the kg. We use it in muesli and porridge and I always put rolled oats in my bread - cupful per loaf. But I'm defo going to try the sprouting. Thanks for interesting thread.

Hello. I feed my 9 hens 3 handfuls dry organic oats first thing - I put the oats on a couple of heavy metal trays; they have organic groats throughout the day in bird feeders and layers pellets in a big feeder; they don't eat many pellets. In the evening they have 2 large handfuls oats mixed with a little organic salmon/turkey cat food or tinned sardine or tuna in water to push up the protein - especially if they are refeathering - these are rescue hens. They free range a large garden all day. They eat a lot of grass. All happy and laying well.

Hi, ours also eat lots of grass, tbh I've never had chickens eat as much grass as these do !
These do seem to have a different palate to previous though, nowhere near as keen on veggies as others - they are out and free to roam almost all day every day and their run & coop are in the middle of our large allotment adjacent to our garden, with large apple trees, 6 plum trees and all our raised beds but they only pinch red gooseberries, raspberries & red currants they can reach on tip-toes (maybe the colour red ??) but not the chard, lettuce, pak choi etc etc our previous birds loved to 'steal' (or strip of leaves to be correct :lau).
Apart from the porridge when the weather's colder, ours have their oats mixed in with their daily treats and they eat everything :thumbsup

We feed our girls cooked steel-cut oats and flaxseed almost every morning. Just cook 'em like regular oats. I add plain yogurt to them. The girls lap it up like a dog loves raw meat.
I was curious about the steel cut oats. I cooked some 1/2 way and added some of their feed, couple cranberries, blueberries, cucumber, & hard boiled egg. Curious about those steel cut oats tho! 🐓❤️
