Production Red Chickens

I bought five production red chickens. I was wondering is a production red the same as a rhode island red or new hampshire red. Are they the same breed or a hybrid. Could some help me out.

I don't know from my personal experience, but I believe I've read on BYC it's been bred to lay more eggs.....not sure about RIR or NHred though. Maybe red sex link????? Someone will know!

Hi, my name is Angie. I just purchased a few Production Reds and I did research on them first and from what I have read, they are a mix of Rhode Island Reds and New Hampshire Reds. They are dual purpose breed, excellent egg production, anfd very friendly. Hope yours do good too.

A production red's makeup isn't always known, even when the hatchery makes a generic statement such as "they are a mix of RIR and NH". But that's not all that's in them. At least TSC's Breed Guide is straightforward enough to admit they have Leghorn blood in them.

Production Red

Egg Production:

The Production Red is very similar to a Rhode Island Red but typically have Leghorn incorporated into their breeding to increase egg production and are often lighter in color to the classic breed. Production Reds are a vigorous, hearty chicken developed for the purpose of efficient production of large brown eggs. Hens are not known to be very broody and are not good mothers as the traditional Rhode Island Red hen can be.

The production red absolutely has NH or RIR blood, because they are red, but they are "blended" and mixed with Leghorn to make them excellent layers. The body type is somewhere between a Brown Leghorn and true RIR. Hope that helps.

Question about baby chicks....I am a newbie but all 12 of baby chicks are doing well, until this morning. It seems they have a little diahrrea. I am feeding them medicated chick crumbles and have been doing good. The lady at feed store said they could have dried toast bread slices, crumbled up..could that cause a problem with their bowls. hi i just bought chicks from TSC and was told they were red sex links but on a thread i read it described my babies as being production red? does anyone know if production red is a sex link chicken? i was under the impression i purchased all pullets but come to think of it they did have two different types of red chicks in the tub they got mine from? any help would be greatly apprecicated.

Not quite the same. The production red is red and the high laying attributes of the Leghorn, the bird of choice that is typically mixed into them, is back enough generations that the bird looks to be a dusty, orange brown, yet still reddish, both males and females. This is also what most hatcheries sell as Rhode Island Reds. They are not shaped correctly (no brick shape) and lack the deep, mahogany color that a true bred, RIR should have.

The Red Sex Link is a different thing. This is a red/gold male used over a silver/white female. This produces chicks that can be sexed at hatch. The females are reddish, with some white feathers while the males are white.

Both production reds and Red Sex Links are notoriously good layers.
