Mealworm farming

Woohooo! Your farm is really jiving! It is an incredible teaching experience to share with our kids and grandkids. Heck, even the neighbor kids have been checking out my mealie farm!

The pupae do not need food until they are beetles, so relax and keep watch! The beetles hatch almost the same color of the pupa except the head is a bit darker so you might not see them at first unless you really look! It will be at least a week unless you have really warm temperatures. I've discovered that my colony activity is directly related to the tempurature of the house.

My guess is that it's dead. Keep watching though. When they're dead, they start drying out and kind of shrinking. It's part of learning the details of your farm! I've had many pupae die now and don't know why. Oh well, I guess there is a % of mortality in the worm world as well.

O M G!! I scratched thru the substrate the other day it it was CRAWLING with tiny larvae. About 1/8 to 1/4 quarter long. I guess they did their thing. Now WTH am I going to do with 40,000 mealworms?!

I can't believe I'm doing this, but after reading this thread and having the chicken love, I just ordered 2200 mealworms from ebay! Gah! Yuck!! The things we do for our flocks, lol...

Can they get TOO hot? I'm in East Texas and would be interested in keeping them outside in my "chick pen." (during the summer it gets 95+ with HIGH humidity) It's completely covered and out of direct sun. I'll post pics as soon as I received them. They are being delivered to the office, so I'm sure that's going to cause a stir!

And don't worry, you will quickly get over the 'yuck' factor once you see how easy it is and how much the chickens love them!

1. Where did you find information about how to do this.

2. how much would it benefit my chickens for me to take the time to learn?

3. Do you have to spend hours, minutes or what per day or week to harvest these things?

4. Is it expensive or cheap?

5. Is it worth the time and effort to do this?

6. How long do they last in the freezer?

I'm pretty busy right now and want to know if I can squeeze this in.

Thanks Rancher
