Is It bad to inbreed, or just to inbreed too much. I've read that it's best to not inbreed, but if you do, only do it for one ore two generations. I just hatched a bunch of chicks, but the parents are brother and sister, and mom and son. Would just be best to get an unrelated bird to breed without the ones I have now?

Any help would be appreciated

All I know about breeding is from DH's cattle.

"Linebreeding" is ok, father to daughter, grandfather to granddaughter, blah blah.

"Inbreeding" is when you breed brother to sister, and you don't want to do that.... much if any. Its not avoidable all the time, just dont let it go one for multiple generations.

I imagine chicken genetics/line breeding can't be too off from cattle...

Hope that helps some.

Don't inbreed at all unless you have specific goals (like working with a new mutation, and even then, outcross to unrelated as soon as possible). Choose unrelated pairs whenever possible. I know people here will say "oh, it's ok to do a little inbreeding...peafowl don't show ill effects like other species" and then later I hear "wow, those wild India Blue peafowl sure are big...and they have such long legs...why are the ones here not like that?" Hmmmm.......

Yes when peafowl were brought to the US there was a lot of inbreeding. I think people would get just a pair for their estate and then the pair would breed and so on and the owners never really got more peafowl, it might have been hard to aquire more...Anyways the inbreeding got so bad that some were dying I think...It really is too bad that we couldn't preserve the wild look in the India blues, if only someone could import some nice tall India blue peafowl...

Whah, googled it, they are way different. Taller, more gold on their backs, different color blue on their neck, more gold in their trains. If I ever have the money I am importing some.

Yep they are taller (both peahens and peacocks), more trim looking, they have more white skin on their face, their trains don't droop when they display, their crest is a bit tighter, and then I think their are some other things...
One of my dreams is to import some...
