Threaded vs. Push In Water Nipple!! PLEASE HELP DECIDE!

I have decided to purchase the chicken water nipples that a lot of people like. I can't decide which one to buy: Threaded or Push in? I would be using a water or soda bottle or the like.

I would not use a water or soda bottle -- the plastic is too thin and may crack during installation. You want something thicker and with a flat surface so the nipple can seat. I used a 5-qt. ice cream tub in the brooder and will use a 5-gallon bucket in the coop.

I've only used the push-in type nipple but they were easy to use and are working well.

I had the same idea.....2 liter Coke bottle. I figured I would put the nipple in the cap, not the actual bottle. I purchased both kinds so I can experiment with what works for me....errrr, my girls I only have 3, so I figure I don't need to worry about anything "large scale".

FWIW, the bakery department at your local grocery has some nice little buckets that their frosting comes in. They may give you one for free... The handle makes it much easier to hang.

I bought the threaded kind because I didn't know I had a choice! LOL I installed them on the soda bottles; on the base, and did not crack any of the bottles (did 2). I also used the gallon milk jugs--no cracks. The thread was tricky to start, so it takes a little patience to get it twisting into the hole. All of mine leaked so I followed the instructions to seal with silicone. For a first timer, it took a bit more effort than I expected, but I like using them. Some of my birds use them, some not so I still have a bucket available outside.

From what I've read, they suggest for thicker walled items, use the threaded, for thinner the push in. I used threadded in PVC and in the caps of 20oz soda bottles for the chicks, and they worked great. Just cut a lobe out of the bottom to refill. Someone suggested large peanut butter jars.

I personally choose neither and use nipple water cups. Just my preference

I have the push-in nipples, and I got them from someone on eBay. All of the birds took to it immediately. In the brooder, I used the plastic quart waterer that you see at the feed stores for chicks. I unscrewed the red part and used some wire to hang it from the grate on top of the brooder. The opening was at the top and made it easy to fill, and I just installed the nipple on the closed end.

I also tried this with a soda bottle, putting the nipple in the cap. Not sure what the problem is, but that one won't release any water unless I squeeze it while the birds are tapping the nipple. I'm going to try poking a hole in the bottle to see if it helps with pressure. I have no idea why it won't release the water when tapped.

They are outside for the first time this week, and I"m planning on using a bucket or a large dog treat canister with a screw-on top.

The nipple waterers are AMAZING. Before I had them, the chicks would poop in their water almost as soon as I put it in the brooder. Elevating it didn't seem to help. But with the nipples, it couldn't have been easier (or cleaner). One of the sellers on ebay also sells the appropriate drill bit. I bought the drill bit along with the push-in nipples, and it was easy peasy. I may just make a bunch of them to give to my chicken-farming friends as gifts

i've got the screw-in type, but wish i would have gotten the push-in. the push-in's would be a lot easier to install- drill the hole, place the grommet and shove the nipple into it - done.
