Mixed Breed Chickens!

To keep this thread alive, even though it has been years, I decided I would like to share with you my little batch of mixed chicks! And they are the cutest! These were actually a surprise, really. We weren't planning to have any more chicks, but funny enough, we find 10 little chicks following a stubborn mother who refused to leave her eggs. But they were so cute! This is what they looked like as little chicks only days old. :jumpy

The hen with the chicks is their actual mother. Her name is Sam, and she is a mixed breed. The father is a mixed silkie, and his name was Cookies, but unfortunately we had to give the little boy away. Such a sweetie.

But the results we got from the chicks were crazy!! They were all so different, and since the parents were both mixed, we got all kinds of different colours and varieties! Sam (the mother) is a small little chicken with red gulls and comb, orange eyes, yellow legs with no feathers and golden/white feathers. Cookies (the father) has purple gulls and comb, deep brown eyes, grey legs with feathers and black with streaks of golden feathers. However, as I said, the combinations were very interesting! All chicks have fluffy heads on their heads, (some with more than others), and combs like silkies. But some chicks have 5 toes while other have four, their leg colours go from yellow, a beige colour, green and grey. Some have feathers on their feet, some don't. Their colours vary from pure white, golden/white, orange and brown/black/beige. Their eyes are from orange and brown. They are very beautiful and unique chicks, and I love them all, all 10 of them.

Here are some pictures of them as pullets. They are cheeky and peak you here and there, but I love them all, and mixing different breeds defiantly outcome in pleasant and exciting varieties!

I really like this thread. I love some of the crosses. I do have a couple as well. Here is one of mine...
This pretty girl is Iris and she is from a Buff Orpington hen named buttercup. and a Americana Roo. She lays cream colored eggs. She was raised by the Royal palm turkey. I love her heart shaped spots.

Hi all

I recently bought 3 15week old Pekin chickens and 2 1week old warren chixkens.
I got them from the same farm ,however I have noticed that the two older ones keep pecking the small ones and pushing them away from the food.
Our co-op is about 150cm x 150cm and we have caged off an area of the garden which is around 6m by 3m, however the warren chickens seek out the younger ones.
In a bid to help them settle in I have put the Pekin chickens in a very large dog crate for during the day, however at night they all sleep in the same co-op.
I'm looking for any advice people can give me to get them all to settle in, these are my first chickens so I'm a real novice to all of thiss.

Thanks

Frab
