My BO hen just got killed by a dog and now I have two chicks who survived and I have them in a dog crate with food, water, and a heat pad. One of the chicks won't stand up, but when I looked at it's legs I couldn't tell much. When I looked at it I could rotate the whole leg in a circle. I don't know what to do. It can kind of hobble around some but that's it. Will it heal? What can I do?
*Edit* I changed the title so that it fits the situation better.

You can raise the orpaned chicks easy, I have done it many times. I am pretty sure the little one has broken leg and it will not heal right. I do not know what can be done. I am so so sorry.

Okay.

Will it survive? I will try to post a pic.

I think you will need to make a brooder for them. I have 10 chicks in my bathroom because I did not want anything to happen to them. I dont know about the one with the bad leg. I had one last year hatch with it leg messed up and I keep him in my sink on a heating pad and it did not make it because it could not stand. I dont know if a one legged chick can get around.

I have used a large cardboard box, lined with newspaper and then pine shavings, with a heat lamp clamped on or near it for the right heat they need. And crumbles and water in chick feeder/waterers. I have also used one of those really big plastic storage boxes from Wal-Mart, fixed up the same way.

How do I make a splint? Will that work? I've read that I now need to set it's leg.

I had a baby chick with a messed up hock joint. I used a straw that I cut open up the side and slipped it on him. Worked great for him. Not sure if a broken leg would be treated the same. try goggling it and see if you can find some advise. Good luck. ps, I used a regular light bulb for a brooder. just adjusted until I found the right wattage to tempature. just be careful with any light next to card board.
