I have a 5 to 5 1/2 week old chick that I don't think is growing to well s/he is much smaller that all the rest of my chicks that are the same age. Anyone have a clue to what it is or could be. I have remove s/he from the rest of the babies but should I put at least one more with s/he so s/he will not be lonely. There are so many in the main brooder that they keep stepping on s/he when all s/he wants is to rest.

Thank you for any help.

If she is a LOT smaller and as you described, "all she want to do is rest" then she may have something wrong with her/him. Not all chicks are healthy enough to make it to adulthood. If the chick protests about being alone, then I would not separate it from the flock. If the chick doesn't mind being alone, then it would probably be a good idea to allow it to be alone.

I once had a chick I had to separate from the others, however it didn't want to be alone. So I made a barrier with some hardware cloth in the brooder, so that the chick could see everybody else, but had it's own section. You could try giving some vitamins for birds, put in the water for the chick, or even probios, maybe help boost it's immune system and growth. Make sure it is not suffering from cocci as that will make chicks grow slowly and sleep alot. If she HAD cocci as a baby, sometimes it takes months to get over it, even after the poo's look normal. Cocci can stunt the growth for a long spell.

Good luck with your baby....Leyla:)

s/he has normal poo's and loves to just sit in her make shift box with a towel in it and sleep. Seems to like being alone. there are over 15 babies in the brooder and she is the oldest yet the same size as my 3 week olds. From my calender s/he will be 6 weeks give or take a day or so on Saturday, that is the day the I bought her. The other one that I got(5 in total 3 died, was a very cold day for baby chicks to be outside)is now outside with two others that were hatched the Monday before I got them. Heck some of my 1 1/2 week old are the same size as her. Her wing feathers are longer than her body.
My Husband is a truck driver that delivers turkey feed to turkey farm and he has seen where a turkey (10,000 in a house) or more is smaller than the rest from a growth problem. So for now that is what I am thinking that it might be but can not remember what the name is it.
For now we are going to make her the house chick and spoiler her. Not for sure if it is a male or female but till we are sure it is HER.

I have one who is much smaller ( a buff orpington who is smaller than the bantams!) but very adventurous, I think she is just a cute little runt!!

When two of my chicks were not growing like the rest, I noticed that they were not getting a chance at the feeders, so I started sprinkling some dry oatmeal around for them. I don't know if that's what helped or not but they started growing and now they can hold their own.

We are looking at getting a nice cage so that she can stay in the house just like a parrot would. Right now she is in a Cat carrier in the brooder room to help her stay warm. I have two feeders in the brooder and I check through out the day since the brooder is in my spare room.

Tiny as he is named is doing good, I guess he is just such a rare find that he is going to grow slow. Here is a picture from a few days back
