Can you teach geese simple commands or concepts.

I'd like to teach them one simple concept: "stay" or, more precisely, don't go through the gate.

Is this possible?
 
The only thing mine have learned so far is to come get some food out of the blue cup when I hold it out and whistle at them, lol.

Goose brains are tiny, and they seem to use all of it on honking, eating, watching for threats and getting scared.

The not going through the gate might work if you can somehow get them to percieve the gate as a very dangerous threat. But if you succeed, that means they will never ever go through it.

A local comedy cirkus here features an "goose trainer". He comments on what the geese do, as in "stand still", "honk", "look to the left", "poop", "flap your wings". It's hilarious!

While your posts are entertaining I must beg to differ; Lucy knows, in, outside, no, okay, swimming, away, hungry, drink and "this way" (when we are going for a walk)...but I must say her favorite word is hungry?

Shows me her wings (stretch) and I say "big wings Lucy" then she usually flaps them for me. Huckleberry is starting to do it for me as well and he is this years gander.....they are smarter than you all think

They were all the way down the drive way by the bridge the other day (hubby and Jack were working in garage) and hubby said "C'mon Lucy, you stay up here". Sure enough she turned around and waddled back up the drive. Jack was amazed.

Well, two of my three know their names already. All I have to say to the little ganderling is "Jackie" and he comes running to me. The third one had problems -- she turned out to be a he, so I had to switch names in mid stream.
 
Mine were taught not to go near the road. (I don't know why geese like to nap on hard surfaces?) They knew that they weren't to go there and stayed away as long as I was in sight. Let me get out of sight and they would start drifting toward the road again. I say drifting because they were just grazing and just happened to get closer and closer. So yes you can train them, but you can't trust them to stray trained.~gd
 
They seem pretty trainable to me.

The problem with training is how do you communicate what you want them to do? Food is usually a good motivator, but mine like praise.

I suspect that they would clicker train pretty easily.
