Adding a hen

Quote:
She'll probably have the upper hand being on her home turf. You could try getting 3 new ducks and introducing 1 (the male or calmest female). They can bond and will be evenly matched for any squabbling. Then you can introduce the last 2.

To the OP:
If you have a particularly laid back hen in your flock, perhaps the lowest in the pecking order, you can do something similar. Put the new silkie together with the hen, let them bond, and then release them back into the flock. The original hen will have to re-establish herself in the pecking order along with the silkie so they'll be picking on both of them. I have learned from experience that establishing pecking order while chicks can go almost unnoticed but add a couple younger and smaller chickens and it can get brutal.

I will soon be doing the exact same thing... I currently have three 4 month old hens and will be getting a silkie in the upcoming weeks. Although it will be a while until she will be ready to be introduced to the others, I'm concerned that it will not be one big happy family. I'm considering just having an extra coop for the one (not ideal, but an option). I'd love to hear more about your experience and how it goes when you add your new one. Thanks for the advise from the others, it has been helpful

I will definetly play an update when I do add a silkie, one way or another. I'm weighing all my options right now. I very much appreciate all the great advice I've gotten! Thanks everyone!

So now I'm nervous. I had one hen and one roo and added one more hen tonight. The other two have been together since hatching and they are so mean to Cornelia (new girl). They won't let her in the coop but she is sitting up high on a perch outside the coop. The other two pecked and circled her a lot. I just hope she's ok in the morning. Any added advice to help?

Maybe separate a part of the coop just for her that the other chickens can't get to if you can. Slowly integrating them is ideal but in all honesty as long as there is no blood or a bunch of feathers missing she should be fine. Almost every chicken goes through this if you bring a new chicken into a flock
