Honestly, they are great birds. We have 2 boys freeranging together and neither one has ever gotten the least bit aggressive with us and they are very polite to their girls as well. No missing...
We love our Nankin hen. She's very sweet and good natured, excellent bird for beginners or kids. She comes when called, she's an excellent bug hunter, likes to sit on your lap (or head, or...
Leghorns are great egg laying chickens. They are friendly to other Leghorns and can easily fly. The only problems is that they are bad in the pecking order and they can make a mess of the yard....
I will start by saying that I love Australorps. In fact, my very favorite hen is an Australorp. She is such a sweet chicken and just let's you walk right up to her to pick her up. She doesn't run...
Hi, Well I have to put my 2 cents in on this one. Not to hurt any BYC'ers feelings, thats not my intent..... but WOW! We use reclaimed wood, hardware cloth, Welded wire, etc......in more configurations that one can imagine, but someone is worried about how to make Chain Link look better. Kills me, its durable, not crazy hard to work with, cost effective compared to other quality run materials, etc... Plant some shrubs, trees , vines...cover it with bamboo, lattice, shade cloth....again, etc. I love the way my run turned out......using chain link. Just my opinion. Here's a pic. [img][/img]

Here is our creation. I was not happy with the chain link either, so we bolted spare planks of wood on the supports so that it would look more like something OTHER than a kennel. It'll always be a work in progress but I was happy about how it turned out!
I am planning on using a run like this too, but I was concerned about the rounded door corner, and how it leaves a gap. Is that not big enough to be concerned about?
I am in the design stage of my large run/coop, but I have talked with the wife and we are going to make a small run / coop from a dog fence we have. I have a 12' x 12' and a 12' x 6'. So if the wife likes this first one I will make a small one too.
I have decided to make the run / coop a tractor style so I can move it about the land. I have a tractor to move it with since I know it will be quite heavy!!
Hope to get some Pictures up by next week. I want to get chicks in it within the next couple weeks so I can prepare for the cold Colorado weather!

All outside now....but have 12 more Dorkings coming on July 9, 2012!!!!!

I think it IS enough to worry about, I actually have my eye on a wood screen door, that I am going to attatch to the existing door and that way I have all my spaces covered. So far though we have been fine, but I understand that I am taking a risk~

I used a dog run!!!..not sure if my photo will load but you're welcome to add me as a friend to see it. we cut the grass today and I filled in the dirt areas with the dead grass..my little chicks enjoyed digging out the grasshoppers I collected! LOL
We use chain link kennels for chicken "tractors" and I agree that they do look too rigid and not as pituresque as I would like - however as I move them every 4 days or so so the poultry get fresh grass - they serve their purpose very well and are relatively lite to move. That being said, the DW didn't like the plainess of the coops so she has been slowly accumilating yard art (metal moon, "antique" rakes. schyths & so on) and I have added window boxes with live plants... will try & get a pic soon to show you.
I use my dog kennel as a tractor also. It does take 3-4 ppl to move it, but it gives our Girls fresh greens and bugs without the threat of predators. But I do LOVE the pics listed here and through the links! And I will be adding some portable pretties to our run for the Girls to look at..and us too!

I almost forgot about the vines discussed! I was just looking up Moon Lily, Datura, this morning for my mom. All parts of Datura (Moon Lily, Jimson, Zion Lily, Thornapple) are poisonous, especially the seeds!
