Here's the story: About 5 years ago I got a cockatiel from a friend. She told me the cockatiel was a girl. I wasn't super positive about this because there was no striping underneath the tail, which I've been told is the way you tell females and males apart. If the cockatiel has stripes, it's a girl. No stripes, it's a boy. Anyways, I wasn't positive, but I accepted it and called my bird a "she". About 2 1/2 years later, I went on vacation and left my tiel at a friend's house. This friend also had a female tiel. I came back from vacation only to be told that "she" had tried (never actually succeeded being the key phrase here ) to mate with my friend's bird. So, I started calling my tiel "he". Now, a couple of days ago, I caught my male PARAKEET in the act of mating with my tiel. Now I am having serious doubts as to my bird's gender. I thought that it might be possible that my tiel was just doing a dominance thing with the other tiel, and the stripes of a female just don't show up on this one? I have heard about mounting as a dominance display between two female dogs, and seen it before in two female guinea pigs, but I really don't know. PLEASE HELP ME SOMEBODY!

My tiel is a white-face. Really pretty, but no cheek patches. Thanks anyway.

Lol. Can you post a picture? Does he/she sing a lot? Talk? With no stripes I would guess its a boy but if he's all white there might not be stripes

white face teils can be one of the hardest to viually sex and sometimes its mpossible...
if its 100% importqnt to you to find out you can get a kit form a place like avian biotec, they can do blood or feather sexing (its very easy to do and not that trumatic, ive done blood sexing before you simply cut a toenail a little too short, get a couple of drops of blood then pack corn startch (or quick stop) onto the nail and repeat untill it stops bleeding.

it costs about $20 and youll get a certain answer as to your birds sex.

that being said its VERY VERY common for both females and males to mount eachother even in birds to mount eachother. my female lineolated parakeet (DNA sexed) will occasionally mount the male shes housed with when hes getting too frisky...shes just puting him back into line lol.

Whiteface cockatiels aren't the hard ones to sex -- it's pieds and lutinos. Unless the cockatiel is a whiteface pied or whiteface lutino, I can sex the bird if I see its picture. A whiteface female looks like a regular female, with a white circle where the orange cheek spot would be, while on a whiteface male, the whole head is white.

Someone else prob knows a better way BUT the only way I figured out how to post a pic is to put it in uploads (look above on the second bar of links) and then copy/paste the code they give you into the the message.
