The chicken coop
I have heard about chickens dying when it gets to hot and I get a little worried about that so would be putting a fan in the coop be a good idea or not? Does anyone else do this?

I have a window fan in mine that is on the outside under the eaves. It pulls air out of the coop and through a window from the cool side of the coop. Keeps the air moving. No smell

and its much cooler too. I also have another one blowing into the covered area of the run, in the shade. I have not had problems with the heat yet. I do however have young birds just now at almost 4 months old. That could make a difference. No I would not put one in the coop itself. One lady put an overhead fan in hers and the hens would not go in.

I have a fan in every one of my coops. I have a total of five coops. I have 21 chickens and not one is afraid of the fans. They just love being cooled off by the cool breeze. I had fans in my coops for over 12 years.....never had one problem. The only problem I ever had was when one of my chickens died from the heat....that's when I decided to install fans. They are fastened well above the perches. All I can say is it works for me. Do what you feel will work for you.

BAD IDEA!!! It can be very dangerous and very hazerdous... chickens are very curious animals and god forbid one of your chickens gets too curious and sticks its beak in the fan while its on.. On hot days all I do for my chickens is have plenty of shade for them.. And since my chickens are free range every day.. I have cold water-ers all over my property.. Dont worry they will be fine..

Ok thank you. They have a nice shaded area under the coop and there are shady trees around the outside of the coop giving some shade. And I provide them with water everyday in their coop.

Yes, countless people have fans for their birds. Without question, they help in hot and humid weather. Just have them safely out of reach or the kind with protective coverings so they can't get hurt. Almost all fans have safe coverings over the blades these days. I've had fans for my birds for the past 15 years since chickens first came into my life. They are so much better for it.

They will NOT be fine if too hot. Countless birds die without proper cooling as can be read about all over this website. One heart breaking story after another, where many of the deaths could have been prevented.

I use a fan in my coop never have I experienced any of them trying to peck at it but it would be a challenge for them to reach it.

they free-range all day long and we have a lot of shade in our property, but I still have a fan inside the coop, turned on all night long, and one inside their run, in case they want to hang in there.

the run has sand on the floor, so i wet the sand on really hot days. They all enjoy laying down on the wet sand, in front of the fan.

Just make sure the blades are protected and that there's no danger of a short-circuit, which could cause a fire.
