hens shoveling food out of feeder

I have the most wasteful chickens. 6 that scratch all the food from one of the feeders per day or as often as I would fill it. Finally I got the pan from True Value Hardware. Now my birds have to lean over the edge to eat or perch on the edge to eat bc its to narrow to stand in there in the pan and eat. It works and keeps all the food in the pan and not in the coop floor. If it was water being spilled I would fix the problem so I decided to bite the bullet and fix this problem , it worked great for my girls.

If you dont mind me asking Nonny, what brand did you swap to?

You know I've put it all in my treadle feeder already and thrown away the bag! LOL

I'm not sure which end of Brisbane you're in, but I get it from Capalaba Produce, and it's on the shelf right next to the Darling Downs stuff. If you give your usual place a call they should be able to to tell you what it is. Just ask for "the one that's just like Darling Downs, but without the sunflower seeds".

If you mix in treats, they will pick out the treats. I would not mix anything in with the pellets and feed grains/treats separately.

I'm not mixing in treats - that's the way the layer mash comes. It's called Barastock Darling Downs Layer, and it contains pellets, grains, sunflower seeds, corn etc......

My hens swiped much of the layer crumble on the floor too. I switched them to pellets. They still swipe the pellets onto the floor if I add scratch in my pellets. I am not adding scratch in my feed any longer.

I have just started having the same problem with my chickens. I feed them the starter as they are about a month & a half old. I filled up the hanging feeder this morning, and checked on them this evening when I went to tell them goodnight, and there was food all out on the coop floor below the feeder that they shoveled out. I am new to this so I will see how it plays out. Awesome site by the way. I really enjoy all of the info here.

Don't know what kind of feeder you are using but it helps to place chicken wire or other kind of wire over the tray in which they eat the food...it keeps them from billing through the feed or flicking it out of the feeder.
