Watering Nipples - How High?

If using the nipples for water inside a coop, how bad are they for leaking?
I have some screw in type water nipples, but am concerned about the shavings in the coop becoming soaked with water.

i just put some in with my 4 week old chicks,i screwed them in to end of a water bottle, using Teflon tape, they work really good no leaks yet, babies are using then just fine,i have shavings down as well ,they are not soaked,i put them so chick reaches just a tiny bit but no to much

Okay, so I tweaked out the inside. I went ahead and just went with PVC inside.

What's great about the current setup now is that I can adjust the height of the PVC by swapping out the middle vertical bar with a longer or shorter piece. Since the water line is so low pressure, none of the PVC is glued so I can change out the PVC easily. I also raised up the outside bar too. Thanks so much for all the constructive feedback everyone. My chicks will be arriving Nov 1-3 so I've still got awhile to go before they even move in the coop.

Thanks so much for the picture. My husband likes this idea best. I thought of using the RV water hose but he's in love with PVC. :) We'll be putting paving stones underneath to raise up a bit anyways ... Love that I can always come to this site and find the answer to the question I didn't know I had 2 weeks ago.

We just added a nipple bucket tonight and was amazed at how fast they figured it out. All I did was show them how it works and they figured it right out. We did raise it up a bit after the girls went to bed tonight. Curious now to see how they do tomorrow with it higher. Thanks for the great info. Love BYC!

This is all really interesting to me, as we have been procrastinating installing our nipple system for several months.  We need to figure out the best way, and one of our main concerns is how to keep the water from freezing in the winter.  Our old style waterers freeze around the base on cold days, and I think a PVC with nipples in it would do the same.  So I guess we will put the nipples directly on the bottom of a bucket (on the theory that three or four gallons won't freeze as fast as a pipe).

Does anyone have ideas about this?

I put insulation around my bucket supplying my indoor PVC then dropped a 25 watt aquarium heater in i . I also wrapped heat tape and insulation around my PVC. Heat tape is only on the outside exposed line feeding the system. The outdoor nipples I just drained and left empty till spring?

I throw a heater (plastic 5 gal bucket safe auto turn on at 35 degrees) and aquarium pump into a 5 gal bucket reservoir and pump the warm water through my pvc pipe on a continuous loop filled with 30 nipples until winter has passed. Then I just unplug the heater and the aquarium pump. Worked last year great.

@Megabite would love to see some pics and/or diagrams of this setup.

Also, Welcome to BYC!

Have you considered heat trace? A small coated electric wire attached to the pvc. Up here in Canada frozen pipes is very common.
