3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Quote:
I have hatched thousands of eggs, and I have never had a "started," egg explode. The exploding eggs I have had were rotten eggs.

This is good to know! What makes a rotten egg though?

Old eggs. For instance, found a nest of eggs. Unknown how long they have been there. Put them in the bator...... bad luck would be rotten eggs exploding.

Rotten eggs have bacteria inside that somehow eluded the egg's defense mechanisms. Because they are infected, they really have little chance of developing. A developing egg that was cracked at some point during incubation could probably also go bad.

If it has a smell or an odd color, then it's rotten. If there is no smell and it has retained a normal color, then it is just an infertile egg or a quitter.

I set some cuckoo marans eggs last wed so they were a week old this morning. They all candled totally clear and I was expecting my salmon favorelle eggs to come today so I decided to toss them. I wanted to crack a few open first to make sure it wasn't just my bad eyesight and the dark of the egg shell before I tossed them. When I cracked the egg on the side of the sink it literally exploded! They egg looked perfectly normal from the outside and there was no smell! Are there any other ways to tell when they are rotten perhaps?

... if you take a week of vacation the first week of every year...

... if your boyfriend went to Lowes today to get more plywood and screws for another brooder on his day off...
(and I'm thinking the one the ducks are currently in is going to be too small really quick - that pekin is growing like DuckZilla)

So the cuckoo eggs were probably already old when they arrived! This is why I don't think I will buy from Ebay anymore! The eggs I buy from here have always developed some even when the post office does it's best to destroy them

I was just gonna say that, too!

Wow I thought bad eggs could explode and contaminate the other eggs! This is great to know that that is only a myth

Yes, bad eggs can and do explode , which is why you need to put on gloves , sniff it out , and get rid of it.
