layer pellets vs. layer crumbles

I tried to give them pellets and I thought the coop had been invaded by a rodent on crack. The place was a disaster. I cleaned up every morning only to find the same disaster the next day. I guess they didn't like the pellets so I went back to crumble.

I recently switched from crumbles to pellets. I wanted to use Purina's new brand that has the Omega 3 in it and pellets were the only option. I didn't notice any difference to my 3 hens. They eat it they haven't reacted adversely to it that I've seen. They seem quite happy when I bring the food around in the morning. I'm glad they didn't decide to be snobs about it.

I buy 40lbs of Purina's Layena Omega 3 for like $16 it lasts my 3 more than a month. They keep me in eggs about 16 a week. So far so good.

My 2.5 year old hens have been on crumbles all their lives. They didn't seem to go through it too fast (except on really cold days) and they never made much mess with it. I accidentally bought them pellets at the store 6+ weeks ago (Purina Layena SunFresh), and they appeared to eat nothing for days. After a little while they did eat a bit of it, and then a bit more, but they went through it probably 3x slower than their crumbles. You could call this efficiency, and maybe it is, but I also think they're getting less nutrition--they also stopped laying entirely at the same time, started molting, and haven't layed again since (as I posted on a recent thread). Maybe it's a coincidence with the pellets, I don't know, but I just went out and got crumbles today. Hopefully they will be happier again, and with some high protein supplements, maybe they will start to lay again for me soon.

I give them pellets because they turned the crumbles in to powder and didnt like them as much even when that what the first layer food they ate. Mine just like the pellets better.

Hey guys,

I know I'm a little late on this thread, but I came across it while trying to do my own research for layer pellets vs. layer crumbles- deciding what's best for my new layers.

Came across this website, which proved pretty informative: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-choose-commercial-chicken-feed.html

According to this, it seems crumbles may be better, though not sure where the research came from. Hope this helps y'all as well!

We used to use crumbles but found that pellets have less waste. The pellets last longer especially when they are on the ground. We do use feeders but its nice to throw some on the ground for them once in a while. The price in almost the same where we buy it except the pellets are 40lb and the crumble is 50 lb. Maybe a wash? We like throwing them food and watch them peck at it. So with that in mind I chose pellets
.
