Ah yes, I had heard that about Guinea hens.

We are definitely getting our hands on a few this coming Spring. (they are just so weird looking that they're adorable) and I will let all of our ladies roam freely in the back yard (while watched, we have lots of neighborhood dogs and cats on the loose.)

Although I'll look it up, quick question, can you house Guinea hens with regular chickens? I can't imagine why not but, if not, then we'll be busy this winter building a new hen (guinea) house.

I'm also getting some this spring. I've never had them. I have been doing a lot of reading and found that it's best to raise them together. But yes, you can house them together. I plan on getting a new flock of chicks and some guineas at the same time and raising them together. I know the guineas like to be up in the trees and they do fly, which is fine with me. They also might not alway go back into the coop, but if they are raised there you have a better chance of keeping them there.
 
My girls LOVE ticks! (Mind you, we only have dog ticks where I live in AZ, not deer ticks) I haven't found a single one on our dogs since the girls have moved in! I hadn't expected it, but I think it's another great reason to have hens.
 
I have 30 hens and 10 guinea hens, all living together. They all go into the coop at night, the guineas are last the ones inside. They like to chase the younger chickens inside first. Last year the tick population was horrible. I was pulling them off my dogs constantly. That's why I got the chickens and guineas last spring. I haven't seen but 1 tick since (1.5 yrs.). I think they both are eating the ticks as they both free range the whole area. Oh, the fleas and stink bugs are gone too. I have 5 goats and the chickens are great at keeping their pen free of fly larvae. Now I need to get some muscovys because the mosquitoes are horrible this year. It was a very mild winter and I suspect without my poultry flock the bugs would be terrible this year.
