Can hens have heart attacks?

I found my lovely Delaware hen, only 7-1/2 months old, dead in the garage where she was comfortably living with another hen. She was fine this morning, perched up on a ladder as usual where she spends the night. She had sunshine (lots of it) and straw and cozy spots and a good life, I thought.

What do the veterinarians and other animal specialists say about sudden deaths? Does anyone know for sure? I've had hens keel over but they were much older and it was to be expected, ie, 5 years of age.

I feel awful! I KNOW it's just a hen, but still...

Sometimes we never know what happened to them.
I'm sorry you lost her, but it sounds like she had a good life.

And yes, I typically attribute sudden deaths with no sign of illness/injury to strokes or heart/organ failures. Last year I had a healthy, active, full of life 9 mo. old pullet die while leisurely laying sprawled out in the dustbath area.

Teach - your 9-month old pullet had a great end. You know that goofy appearance they have when they are doing their dust bath, they almost look as if they are ready to croak from sheer bliss.

By the way, if I might change the subject: I don't understand how these things work, but how come easttxchick has 8399 posts and teach1rusl has 8363 posts, yet one is named Flock Master and the other is classified as Golden Feather? Just curious. Guess I'll be a New Egg for a while yet...

Yeah - I guess you could say Ginger had a good chicken death...much better than falling victim to a predator or a slow illness.

Golden Feather is a level of membership. There's basic (free), golden (pay $20/yr), and platinum ($60/yr). So (I think) Easttxchick has a basic membership, and has reached a certain amount of posts to earn the title of Flock Master. I chose my title of "Love My Chickens." As a GFM you can have put there whatever you want. Anyone who has a GFM has that bar above their avatar - it just shows you're a supporting member. Hope that helps

The "FAQs" page will lead you in the right direction. On the old platform, the ad at the bottom of many pages was a "Support BYC" banner which advertised the GFM (Golden Feather Membership).


I hate sending directions instead of providing the link myself, but I haven't figured out how to do that quickly without losing my spot.
