Experienced Trader Joe hatchers

The one that I ordered is roughly 40 watt heater when it is on, but it will be turning on and off frequently so I would bet it is about 15-20 watt usage factoring in the "off" time.

I wish I had some trader joe's chicks i could hatch! Washington state doesn't seem to have any fertile eggs in grocery stores.
I actually did a search for electricity use and found several interesting discussions. Incubation doesn't use a terribly large amount of power...but those brooder heat lamps can put you in the poor house. Regular incandescent bulbs can work fine for a brooder most the time.

I wonder how many TJ's have fertile eggs across the country.

How fascinating.... you Cali people <shakes head> get fertile eggs at the store, Lucky Chicks!

So the idea is just the novelty? Low cost chicks? Wonder if anyone has put a watt meter on their incubator for 21 days to see what the cost of incubation is? Cali elec is high isn't it?

Still, pretty cool!
Yes, Electric is high here in So Cal. We have a solar electric system on our home that covers about 75% of our electric bill. Plus, day time is high peak usage time and that is when the solar works so it really helps with cost.

You all have inspired me. So today it's my turn for the "experiment". Our 4H leader had never heard of doing this but my daughters and I are egg-cited to try!

None of my TJ eggs developed. They were discarded on day 12. I had thrown in a few eggs from my own flock just to see what would happen since I had never hatched before. Those eggs are actually developing, so I know my 'bator is fine.
