Hello to my new BYC friends. I have 26 2 week old chicks that I have been feeding medicated feed since day 1 and have been giving them Quik Chik water since day 1 also. They are thriving and doing great but on my FB page of 'My Pet Chicken' they said to NOT give any vitamin water to chicks at all as they can easily get overdosed. Not only if you're doing medicated feed, but I'm even doing both.

Is that wrong?

Needless to say I am shocked and concerned a bit as I have been trying to do everything possible right with these little chicks (this is my first time ever with chicks or chickens btw) and I don't want to mess anything up. They are doing great like I said but could this really happen? Should I back off the water and just keep giving them the feed? Thank you for any help. Kim

one thing to keep in mind is "KISS" keep it simple, stupid. My grandmother told us that all the time growing up. Especially trying something new, we humans tend to over-think and over-analyze things.

I'd cut out BOTH. I know lots of people feed the medicated starter; I've used it in the past when some hatchery chicks were looking "poorly". I've also used vitamins in the water when I had a hen going through a really hard molt. But, most of the time, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

If they aren't acting sick, then you haven't overdosed them. cut out the vitamins or the food or both. enjoy your chicks. don't worry and have fun :)

Thank you. We usually say Keep It Simple Silly since stupid is the bad S word around here. lol.

I did stop the vitamin water but have a huge bag of the medicated feed left so will finish it off and then just put them on the chick starter food. They are 3 weeks old yesterday and are doing great and getting big fast! I've read a lot about the benefits of the med chick feed so I think I'm ok with staying on that. And will 26 in a brooder I want to give them all the best chances at health I can so for me right now this works. Thanks again for your reply. We are really enjoying them. Kim

My 5 day old baby chick started chirping loudly and was in the corner. I picked her up she seemed weak. She has been fine all day. I noticed heavy breathing and her beak was open, tried offering water, nothing. She seemed to be weak. Took her and held her for awhile, but her back and she stood for a bit and laid down. This is my first time with chicks. Anything I should be doing or normal behavior? As of now no chirping, just heavy breathing. I lowered the lamp just a tad. Sorry if this sounds stupid. Just lost a hen I found 2 days ago 💔
