Hi, we are incubating for the first time and candled our eggs tonight. I thought I saw that all 17 were fertile, but now that I have done more research I think we have a couple blood rings. Can anyone tell me what they see please. It is day 3.
The first two pics are the same egg. (Silkie/Cochin) The last one in an Amerucana/Cochin. TIA!

I would just give the eggs a few more days. Just to be sure. I does look like a blood ring. I just don't toss them until I'm certain.

I agree. Give it a couple more days....I am doing my first batch and all mine looked like the last pic around day 3, but everyone told me not to even candle til day 7. Also many people have recommended doing the "smell test". Smell the egg and if it smells rotten get rid of it because it has bacteria in it....don't want it to explode in the bator

From what I've learned, and I'm new to this, is that that ring is more than likely a blood ring. (sorry) I had a couple myself in this hatch I'm working on now. I left mine until I was well past the halfway point. Then it was obvious that it wasn't developing as were the others.

Bacteria is the suspected culprit for the bloodrings. The egg has that special coating called 'bloom' (I think) and it protects the eggs as much as possible. Our hands, the oils, acids and bacterias that we carry can affect the eggs too when we handle them. I try to wash my hands well before I handle them.

It's crazy cuz my first egg to pip is a day early, peeping like mad and is the dirtiest! LOL We've nicknamed him Turdy. heehee I did not clean off my eggs before placing them in the bator. (I ordered mine from a member out here) Doing so can cause more problems than just leaving it.

I'd check for a bad odor and/or sweating. I had one "sweat". It's just a bad egg and it's oozing. You get a wet one or a skunky one.... toss it!

I wish you much luck in your hatching.

That is a blood ring. It means that the embryo has died and the blood has moved away from the dead embryo. It's not likely to explode if you feel better leaving it in a couple more days to be sure, but at that point, I'd remove anything with a blood ring. If I saw that in my bator, I'd take it out.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I think there are possibly a bunch of the eggs with rings. (Maybe 4.) So I'm going to leave them a few more days, and then throw away. I sure appreciate the help since half the time I'm not sure what I'm doing. lol.

4-H Chicken Mom, you are right down the street from us. We live in North Ridgeville!!

Thanks, I hope so too. I think I will have to toss out a few. I wasn't even expecting all of them to be fertile. (Props to my rooster! lol) It's such a cool process the whole thing!
