Hello everybody...
I was out feeding everyone some treats and noticed a really foul odor...I checked all of them immediately and realized it was my black cochin's rear end. Her feathers have matted together and her vent is red on one side and there was sticky yellow poop on and under her vent.

Is this Vent Gleet? How do I treat this? I thought I read somewhere NO antibiotics. Gonna need help with this one.

I have no real history on her. I was told when I bought her at a farm swap (lesson learned on that one!)

that she was a great layer...that was the middle of January and I have yet to see a egg from her. She is a bit stand-offish. She stays behind everyone, last to the feeder, last to drink, won't roost on the roosting bar...she stays on top of a nesting box closer to the floor. However, she is quick to peck at the younger pullets at the feeder and waterer. Not sure if her behavior reveals anything or not.

She gets Bragg's ACV in her water, Epsom Salts in her pellets, and evening mash usually consisting of white or brown rice, butter milk or yogurt, spinach or romaine lettuce, wheat bran, fresh garlic and olive oil and strawberries, apples or grapes. Morning treats are usually greens or fruit.

I keep Diamatious Earth and Seven Dust in the coup and where they take dust baths.

Thank you for any help you can offer!!

I am hesitant to say she has vent gleet because it really doesn't sound like she does. I would start with a thorough bath and see what shows up on her butt in the next few days. If the discharge continues then I might re-consider.

Good luck.

Thank you! That is such a relief. I will bring her in today for a bath. Should I use anything in particular or just something gentle like baby shampoo?

Baby shampoo would work, but I like to use a gentle dish soap to cut through the oil. Birds are pretty oily.

Excellent...
I have a bottle of Mrs. Myers organic dish soap...I will use that. We'll go from there.
I will keep you posted! :D

Oh my gosh!!! The geranium scent is by far the best. I have the counter spray concentrate. I spray it EVERYWHERE!! Lol It's almost addictive.

Ok...good to know. Her bum is really foul smelling and has like a slimy ,sticky yellow poop that sticks to her vent. Her vent is still a bit red. :(

Could this be Egg Yolk Peritonitis? I have a chook with this that has similar symptoms. Have you checked her abdomen- does it feel hot or spongy?
