I've had a problem with scaly leg mites, not to that degree, but I found them very difficult to get rid of. What finally worked after the Red-Kote didn't... after the Vaseline with poultry dust in it didn't... repeated weekly treatments...... After using a toothbrush to scrub up under the the loose "scales".... nothing I read worked.
What finally worked (for me) was not just cleaning the coop and using Sevin Dust (on coop and chickens)... but then (a week later) cleaning the coop early one morning (let everyone out to free range during...) then, I had purchased and I used the permethrin spray from the feed store... (diluted per directions on the bottle for chickens and surfaces).... sprayed down the whole cleaned 9and empty) coop and then let it dry completely, even put a fan in there to help air it out and dry it.. then... I also sprayed some permethrin spray directly onto the legs of the ones with the most serious problem... everyone had gotten dusted with Sevin Dust the week before.. then, the permethrin spray on the feet and the coop (replacing the nesting material afterwards, after it was dry)... well, that finally did it.
All the other remedies evidently didn't work for me because I didn't go out and repeat them everyday for two weeks, etc...
With this serious problem with him, you might also do the Epsom Salt soak and toothbrush scrub first.... and worm him with Valbazen (be sure you know how to correctly give oral medication). Worm him twice, dust him with Sevin Dust a week before or a week after the permethrin spray. Feed him some good food... some cabbage and oyster shells, maybe some Pedialyte (unflavored) in his water one day and then the Organic Apple Cider Vinegar in his water the next, and repeat... maybe mix some buttermilk or yogurt into his food to make a wet mash once a day for a while. Seems he needs to get well and healthy. Good of you to take him, I hope he turns out to be a good and loving guy.
It is contagious, just as mites are... and you can and should use the Red Kote or Blu Kote spray on his comb and other injuries... he may have mites on his comb (and body) as well as worms and the scaly leg mites. I would isolate him until he's better -- so the rest of your flock doesn't catch all that he has... still I would dust all the flock with Sevin Dust at least, repeating in ten days -- and cleaning the coop and spraying or dusting it while he is in quarantine? I am sure others will have other ideas and suggestions... but, you should protect your flock, he may have other illnesses, and it's easier to worm just him alone ( keep him isolated, quarantined ) easier than to re-worm your whole flock and have to withhold the eggs for the duration.
Best of luck..
