Not egg bound... what's wrong?

I have a sick chicken in my room, and I dont know what is wrong with her. She has been like this for two and a half weeks. At first I thought she was egg bound, but egg bound hens usually die before a week is up, and I put my finger up there and I cant feel an egg. She doesnt have egg yolk peritonitis because she would have died already. Here are some details of the hen.

She is a female Rhode Island Red
she is almost four years old
she has the "penguin stance"
she is eating and drinking normally
she Occasionally clucks
she sometimes breathes heavy, but mostly normally
her crop feels normal
her bottom is kind of soft
we have not gotten an egg from her since I brought her in

If anybody has had a chicken like this before, please let me know. Please include how to treat her, if you know how. If you think she is eggbound or egg yolk peritonitis, say so.

Please help me save my hen!

It sounds like she might have ascites, or 'water belly.' It happens when a chicken's abdomen fills with fluid. Ascites is usually marked by a belly/abdomen which is enlarged and a bit squishy. If this is the case, then you can drain her belly to relieve the pressure and reduce the fluid. Here is a good thread I found on Ascites. I actually just drained two of my girls on Friday. I used 12cc needles with a 18 gauge (1 inch) syringe. You could drain anywhere from 200-400 ccs of fluid.

Good luck with your hen!

Two weeks have passed and she is still not better. I have given her mango and I thought that helped, but when I put her back in the coop she got beat up. So now she is back in my room. She is aiming her tail feathers down and it seems like she is really hurting. I will try to post some pictures a little later.

I dunno what to do!! Please help me!!

I agree with Braec. This is what I think is wrong with my Omelet too. I just got the stuff I need to drain her abdomen but I don't think it's a one person job so I need to wait until my husband gets home.

Hope your girl feels better!

Today I dont think its ascites because her belly does not feel swollen anymore. She is so weak that when she tried to run she fell and landed on her back. She is losing weight fast; I have never seen a chickens breast bone stick out so far

Egg yolk peritonitis can be somewhat slow in causing death sometimes. It still might be her problem.

She is skinny on her breastbone, but does she feel a little squishy or bloated anywhere lower down?

Maybe draining her belly would be worth trying if it feels like she has build-up of fluids.

A close-up photo of her out on the floor standing in a penguin stance might help with diagnosing, also.

There is some info on ways to help emaciated chickens on the Fungal Infections page on the site linked in my sig below, if any might help, too.

I am glad you are giving her some tender care & hope you are able to find solutions.
