I have 5 chicks. I am building a coop. I have had chickens before and had to get rid of them due to noise. My mistake, I THINK, was letting them out early. They were waking everyone up at 5:15 am. This time, I am hoping to keep the chickens. All will be good if I can keep them quiet until 7am. No one cares the rest of the day if they make noise. So, I have heard to keep the coop dark... but then there is no ventilation. I have heard that they should be able to let themselves into their run... but then it's not dark. I'm confused! Please give me advise so I can keep my chicks!
I have 1 RIR, 1 buff orpington, 1 black sex link, 1 wyndotte and 1 ameracouna. Sorry- cant spell all the breeds!
Thanks!!!

I keep my coop fairly dark with some feed sack curtains I hung over the window. My chickens have to wait until I get up and moving before they're allowed to come out. My neighbors aren't close, so its for my own benefit I do these things. Put your vents close to the roof, hang some curtains and let them out when you're good and ready. My chickens have food and water inside and outside, so if I'm late getting out to open the door, they can still get to the floor and get some breakfast and a drink. Hope this helps. Good luck chickening, I hope it works out for you this time!

We used to open the hen house door and let our 5 hens out at around 6:30-7:00 AM. This wasn't so bad on the weekdays but on Saturday/Sunday mornings I was concerned about the noise. We changed their out time to 8:00-8:30 AM and that took care of the problem.

I let them out between 7 and 7:30am if I've shut them in the night before (I leave the coop door open during warm weather). They want out earlier some times, but they get over it.

Roosters will crow at almost all hours, even at night. Get rid of roosters. Normally my hens when in presence of rooster are very quite unless scared or just layed an egg. Hens only can be almost as rowdy as a rooster if no rooster is present, especially in morning and when going to roost.

Are you in location with prohibtions against poultry?

My city allows hens- not roosters. That's ok since I don't want a rooster anyway. I think I am the most affected by the noise! I really don't want to get up at the crack of dawn for chickens. By 7 we are up and I can deal with anything!

we have five hens, no one is noisy how noisy can hens get? I asked my neighbors and they all say they do not hear them at all. I open my girls coops at 7:00 am every morning, but soo we will have an electric door on it and that will do my work for me! Im so excited, we are going to sleep in late and they can get up and do what they want with out bothering me. there is always food and water in the pen, but since we put it all away at night we will just add it to the coop and then they can go in and out eating and drinking until we get around to adding food and water to the pen. happy dance day when that coop door is put on and we can sleep late on weekends!!! ( or during holidays, week days etc. LOL
