There is a couple of flaws in the above picture examples. The top left hand snake is a non-venomous juvenile tree python. The snake in the top left hand corner appears to be a black mamba which is of course extremely venomous. In native species it might be true that elongated pupils and pits around the mouth indicate a venomous snake, but that is not true of non-native species. Many species of pythons (such as the one above) have pits. A lot of non-venomous species have slitted pupils. My boas all of elongated pupils and of course are not venomous. Coral snakes do not have pits or slitted pupils and are venomous. That is not a very reliable way to tell the difference as indicated by the top two snakes.

Pretty much the only venomous snakes with slitted pupils are vipers. Cobras, Mambas, Taipans, Boomslangs, Sea Kraits, Tigers, Eastern Browns, Feirce snakes, etc....all extremely venomous, all round pupils.

(And please for heaven's sake, don't trust sources that refer to snakes as "poisonous" rather than "venomous". They are almost always made by people with little understanding of reptiles in general.)

Here in the wild wild west we get rattle snakes.. and before I udated my coop security a Mohave got into the run.. I almost stepped on him.

I have a bit of the same rule about rattlers.. OK if you leave me alone stay off my property... but the chickens food attracts little mice and little praries and ground squirrels that the rattlers love to munch on.. my rule is if they are eyeballing me or my chickens then well.. they get a celestial discharge from this world. - but we do donate the remains to the local scavengers coyotes etc.

I had a friend who used to spray paint them and then kill them if they came back... well they always come back... so I was just cutting out the middle man..
king snakes are welcome.. heres a pic.. if you see a rattle.... I would stay away.. out here if a rattler bites your dog.. it depends on the response.. most dogs can handle the bit with lots of TLC and antinflammatories.. limb loss is rare... if you get a face bite on a dog.. take him/her to the vet.. anyhoo when in doubt get away..
