chick constantly opening and closing beak

some times a baby chick will get grit lodged in its crop and will act as you described. when i have a chick doing like that i will gently massage its crop and make sure it gets sugar water. at this point water is much more vital to the chick than food

you need to separate the chick, put electrolytes /vit in the waterer (get at feed store) and get some baby parrot handfeeding formula at your petstore >this is a powder you mix with water... make it a bit "prridgy" in texture and mix 50/50 with the chick starter to concentrate the nutrition.
Are you using medicated chick starter?

I am using medicated chick starter. The chick, Bijou, is doing much better today. My daughter got up and checked on her every 2 hours last night. She gave her PediaLyte and some chick starter mixed with water and vitamins. When I checked on the chick this morning, she seems a little weak but is eating out of the feeder and drinking out of the waterer as well as runnung around. We will continue to give her some electrolytes every couple of hours to make sure she is getting what she needs.

Hey everybody! I have a couple day old barred rock chick who's opening and closing her mouth constantly and is slightly lethargic. She's one of 6 chicks I bought 2 days ago from our local feed store and the others seem to be acting normally. I separated her and she's laying down for the most part with her eyes closed but is still coherent if she hears a noise. It looks like she's panting but chooses to be under the heat source anyway. I'm just curious to see how this has turned out for others?
